Every Monday, Add of the Week unveils all the new songs going into the 88Nine on-air playlist, with one hand-picked selection put in the spotlight by a member of our music team.

For this week’s pick, I present the latest from Staten Island instrumentalists The Budos Band. Jumping out of the Daptone nest, the cats have decided to make the music a part of their own meditation, self-releasing on their own Diamond West Records.

Their sound is endemic to itself, and if you’re like me, you enjoy dramatic flourishes to instrumental funk-flavored jams that are cinematic in their musicality and funky as fish sauce set to sound. A two-and-a-half minute jam called “Frontier's Edge” feels like the first chapter in a fantasy book and dredges their dungeon-y onion in dragon grease while cooking it in it’s own fire.

There can be no lyrics in music that burns as hot as this, so let this simmer till you’re tender.
